Chapter Seventeen

Jinx had made a fatal error, and it looked like not only he was going to pay for it but Joey would too. He hadn’t been paying attention to his surroundings. All of his training had flown out the window. He had walked out of that fucking hotel room like a civilian. If he could kick his own ass right now, he would. The first thing you're taught is always be aware of your surroundings, and he had epically failed. Hell, he hadn’t even had a weapon on him, not that it would have mattered.

“Come on, sweetheart, wake up,” Jinx cajoled for the hundredth time. He couldn’t move to shake her or even look at her. The fuckers who had taken them injected them with some kind of sedative. Jinx hadn’t seen them before they were on him at the hotel, pushing that shit into his veins. He fought it and got a little intel in his more awake moments. The Perez Cartel, specifically Miguel Perez, had taken them. One consolation was Tank had Hunt, and hopefully, they hadn’t come back from breakfast until after these assholes left.

They had thrown him and Joey into an SUV, and she had been covered in blood. Jinx had only been able to move his body enough to see she was still breathing before the drug completely knocked him out. Now, they were in some kind of basement, tied to a pole in the middle of the floor. He could feel Joey’s hands had a rope around them, but his were held by zip ties. He couldn’t see her breathing but checked her pulse often, just to make sure her heart was still beating. He didn’t have any idea how badly she was hurt or what he was going to do to get them out of there. Right now, they were up shit creek without a paddle. He didn’t care if his voice was getting hoarse, he kept on repeating a version of the same thing.

“Come on, sweetheart, talk to me, wake up, Joey.” Joey moaned, and it was the sweetest sound he had ever heard. When she started to jerk at their bindings, he kept talking. “Baby, listen, you need to stop.”

“Jinx?”

“Yeah, honey, it’s me.” Jinx was able to grasp her fingers and hoped it offered her some reassurance. Jinx could feel Joey moving her head, hitting the pole.

“What happened, where are we?”

“You don’t remember?”

Joey was quiet for a long time. “No. I remember us talking. I must have fallen asleep. OH MY GOD! Jinx, he killed her right in front of me and some other man named Javi too. Right there in the room. Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod! What are we going to do? That man was evil, Jinx. He walked right over her body like it was no big deal, like she didn’t matter, like it didn’t matter he shot off half her face, then did it to Javi too.”

He could hear the panic in her voice, her breathing coming out in short puffs, and her body started to shiver.
